The calendar says that the summer has not yet started, but for the young swimmers of Oak Ridge’s USA Swimming year-round competitive team, the Long Course (50 meter pool) summer season is well under way. The Atomic City Aquatic Club competed in its second long course competition of the spring in the Scenic City recently. ACAC traveled to the Baylor School Natatorium for the May 14-16 Nike Swim Long Course Invitational. The event was hosted by the Baylor School Aqua Raiders. A total of 365 swimmers representing seventeen teams from across TN, Alabama, and NC competed.

The morning of May 1st a strings competition was held at South Doyle High School. Competing were the combined orchestras from the fifth and sixth grades from Oak Ridge’s two middle schools, Robertsville and Jefferson. Ms. Abbie Wilmore was the musical director. Twelve different schools from East Tennessee also competed with a reward trip to Dollywood that afternoon for some fun in the sun and then all attended an awards ceremony that evening that recognized the outstanding group and individual performances.

The short course (25-yd pool) championship season kicked off in Chattanooga February 20 and 21 with the Southeastern District East Championships held at the Baylor School Aquatic Center. Better known as the “Eight and Under Championship” the meet also served as last chance for all age-group swimmers to obtain Southeastern Swimming qualifying times and a ticket to compete in one of the jewels of regional USA Swimming events: The Southeastern Championships hosted by Nashville Aquatic Club held at the Centennial Sportsplex February 25-28.
