Assistant Coach: Betsy Hondorf
By joining the ACAC coaching staff, Betsy Hondorf (nee Batchelor) returned to her Oak Ridge roots, bringing with her years of swimming and coaching experience and a proven record of growth and improvement in club and scholastic swim programs. She is certified as an American Swim Coaches’ Association Level 3 Coach, and was an ASCA Fellow 2008-2009. Her coaching career began in 1988 as head coach at Concord Hills Country Club and has expanded to include coaching USA Swimming associated club teams, as well as high school and collegiate teams. An Oak Ridge High School graduate, Betsy swam for ACAC until 1986. She also competed in high school swimming and was the Oak Ridge High School Swim Team captain, leading the ORHS Wildcatfish to several Tennessee State High School Championships. Upon graduating from ORHS, Betsy swam for Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, where she was a four year All American and an Academic All American, as well as a three-time NCAA finalist in the 200 breaststroke. Betsy graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1992 with a degree in Biophysics and went on to graduate school at Emory University in Atlanta. While at Emory she worked as a graduate assistant coach with the college team. She was awarded a Masters Degree from Emory in 1994 in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis, and she began teaching and coaching at Brandon Hall School in Atlanta. After coaching at Emory, Betsy continued coaching for a number of club and scholastic programs. From 2002 to the present, Betsy was senior coach and sometimes head coach for the Cleveland Aqua Tigers, a USA Swimming associated team. Her efforts produced numerous Southeastern Championship qualifiers and a number of individual as well as relay qualifiers for Senior Sectional Championships. While in Cleveland, Betsy also initiated a swimming program for Cleveland High School and a high school swim team. In 2009 her Cleveland High School team qualified twenty-one swimmers for the Tennessee High School State Championships. With a life-long love of swimming Betsy not only coaches, but continues swimming in competition herself. She has swum at Master’s Nationals twice. While coaching for Atomic City Aquatic Club, Betsy will be teaching physics and chemistry at The Webb School of Knoxville. She is married to Lars Hondorf, a native of Rochester, NY. Betsy and Lars have three boys, Loki, Tyr and Vidar, all who swim for ACAC.
